Notes The listing is always pulled from the "Participating Schools" list. Schools may be listed slightly differently elsewhere in the Results documents, but I assumed the Participating Schools list was authoritative (except in 2007 in Division 1A; see below). From the beginning of the Contest in 1981 through the 1983 Contest, J. Peter Westergard compiled the results. Westergard's fashion of listing the Official School Name was to use a parenthetical with the place desigantion, such as "Adlai Stevenson (Prairie View)". I have used this as the Official School Name for these years; in addition, I have listed the school's location (what was inside the parentheses) separately, as if the listing were "Adlai Stevenson (Prairie View), Prairie View". Note that for 1983, using the parenthetical as part of the Official School Name eliminates a total ambiguity between "University High (Normal)" and "University High (Urbana)"; this had been the only year this had occurred, as Uni (the one in Urbana) only competed in Division A once. In 1984, Eric Easterberg compiled the results. Easterberg used a comma to separate the location, such as "Adlai Stevenson, Prairie View". I have used the part before the comma as the Official School Name, and the part after the comma as the location. In 1985, the Contest had two results compilers for the first time, and they had different techniques. Richard C. Muller compiled Division A, and Roger A. Finnell compiled the AA results. Muller reverted to the Westergard approach, while Finnell kept the Easterberg method. I have treated them likewise here, with Division A as Westergard and Division AA as Easterberg. Additionally, I have retained any abbreviations that actually show up in the list, even though it is possible that the abbreviations were only used to make names fit on this page; for example, Governor French Academy is listed as "Gov. French Acad. (Belleville)", rather than being spelled out. Note that I have also maintained other abbreviations, such as "Lisle Sr." in 1988, as opposed to "Lisle Senior" in 1984 or "Lisle" in 1983. (They are all the same school.) (I remember vividly when Carol Kajor was Contest Chair that she admonished the contestants NOT to use abbreviations, so I am being specific about preserving the names exactly as written.) In 1986, Muller and Finnell again were the Statisticians (now credited as such), and Finnell kept the same method, except for "University (Urbana)", which follows the Westergard method. Muller changed in two ways: there was a shift to the Easterberg method, but also nearly all high schools had "HS" appended to their name. For example, the school that was "Massac County (Metropolis)" in 1985 was "Massac County HS, Metropolis" in 1986 (and "Massac Co. HS, Metropolis" in 1987). This would continue to be a difference between the Divisions for many years. I have chosen to keep the school names as listed, including the "HS" suffix. (Editor's Note: I had originally changed the Westergard method to the Easterberg method in all cases, as well as removing the suffixes "HS" and "High School" and undoing some abbreviations, but I later felt this was inappropriate and went back and changed them to the original.) In 1987, the difference between Divisions A and AA became more pronounced, as Finnell kept the same method (except going back to "University, Urbana" for Uni), while Muller spelled out "High School" for nearly every school. 1988 and 1989 were the same, with 1989 having the confusing entry of "Harlem (Loves Park), Rockford". The 1987 convention remained through the 2000 Contest: every Division A school ended with " HS", "High School", " School", or " Academy", while no Division AA school used the word "High School", and very few used "Academy", with IMSA dropping that for the 1997 Contest. For the 2001 Contest, the competing schools were divided into four Divisions for the first time. Muller was still listed as "Division A Statistician", now responsible for 1A and 2A, and Finnell as "Division AA Statistician", now responsible for 3AA and 4AA. As might be expected, 1A/2A continued to look like A since 1987, and 3AA/4AA continued to look like AA since 1987. This continued through the 2004 Contest. 2001 was the first year for "High School of St. Thomas More"; it was the only 1A school not to end with "HS", "School", or "Academy". Also Uni returned in 2001 to "University (Urbana)" as in 1986, before changing back in 2002 and changing completely to "Univ. of Illinois Lab" in 2003. For the 2005 Contest, Roger Finnell was the only Statistician. As such, all four Divisions looked like the larger-school divisions had looked for two decades. (Editor's Note: This was a great relief in reviewing this data to have it be consistent for one year. This would not last.) For the 2006 Contest, Finnell returned as the Division AA Statistician, and Ron Vavrinek was named Division A Statistician. Vavrinek made two major changes to the reporting from the previous years. First, on the Grand Totals (i.e., the Places) page, regional winners and at-large teams were no longer designated with prepended letters but with postpended symbols. (Finnell did not change AA to match.) Second, no school was listed with a location, except "University High School (Normal)", which was listed in the Westergard fashion. This was the first time in Contest history that many schools (whose locations might not be obvious) were listed this way. (Again, Finnell did not follow suit in AA, but only for 2006; Division AA removed the locations starting with the 2007 Contest.) Vavrinek listed nearly all of 1A as " HS" and nearly all of 2A as " High School". Also, Vavrinek abbreviated "Community " as "Comm." and "Township" as "Twp." in 2A every time they appeared; the former had only been used three times previously, and the latter had never been used at all. This was consistent going forward: "Community" was shortened always in 2A and never in 1A or in 3AA/4AA. For the 2007 Contest, the 1A Participating Schools list was incorrect. (See below.) In 2013, U-High became "University (Normal) High School", as every 2A school except Nazareth, Lake Forest, and Marmion Academies ended with "High School" (including Joliet Catholic). Wheaton-Warrenville South takes Wheaton Central's spot, because I know the history "McLeansboro" and "Hamilton County Senior" are the same school that moved to a new building, like Wheaton Central (source: http://www.mcleansborotownship.com/historyTownshipHighSchool.php) 1994 "Jefferson City" assumed to be Johnston City (has the same coach, and otherwise Johnston City isn't participating yet finished 4th) 1994 "Mount Assisi Academy, Wheaton" assumed to be Mount Assisi, Lemont (has Coach listed as "Lemont") 2018 "Denlap" must be Dunlap (same coach and a state place; see also "Jefferson City" 1994) Leyden is listed as a single school, sometimes in FP (where I know East is) and sometimes in Northlake (where I know West is), but later East Leyden (FP) is listed separately, so I have them (Leyden, East Leyden, and West Leyden) as three separate schools Even though I know "St. Charles East" is the original St. Charles, I list them separately. Similarly with Lincoln-Way Central vs. Lincoln-Way. Since Normal Community didn't change its name after Normal Community West opened, I can't separate them; it *is* the same school. Plainfield is a different matter, as there's a debate over whether the original Plainfield (after Plainfield South opened) should be Plainfield or Plainfield Central. Here I choose to list "Plainfield" and "Plainfield Central" separately, though the school may go back and forth over time. Similarly to the splits above, I maintain that consolidations are separate schools. New Trier East, New Trier West, and New Trier are three separate schools. Farmer City-Mansfield and Blue Ridge are two separate schools (because Bellflower joined with the former to make the latter). Sacred Heart, Griffin, and SH-G are separate, as are Paxton and P-B-L, as are Gibson City, Melvin-Sibley, and GCMS. Carthage is a bit trickier; clearly Carthage and Illini West are different schools (because of consolidation), but Carthage and Hancock Central may be the same school. I have them separate for now but might change it with more research. Alexis and Warren [Monmouth] consolidated to United after the 2004 Contest Union [Biggsville] consolidated with Southern to West Central after the 2005 Contest Immaculate Conception [Elmhurst] was renamed IC Catholic Prep before the 2013 Contest Alpha Omega went from "Home School" to "High School" for the 2013 COntest but has the same coach, so I've assumed it's the same school; same with North Shore (also same coach) Mount Assisi [Lemont] closed after the 2014 Contest; I noticed this when the coach showed up at Holy Trinity [Chicago] In 2014, the formatting became different again in 1A/2A, and school names once again followed the 3AA/4AA convention of dropping "High School". This formatting (which is very pretty) continued at least through 2019, while the AA formatting is the same as it ever was. 2018 "Kelly" is assumed to be the same school as Thomas Kelly [Chicago] 2018 "Mt. Carmel" is probably Mt. Carmel [Chicago] and NOT Mt. Carmel, because it's in Region 14 with Crete-Monee, Lincoln-Way West, Marist, etc. 2019 both Mt. Carmel [Chicago] in Region 14 and Mt. Carmel in Region 5 (with Mt. Zion, Fairfield, Salem, Robinson, etc.) are Participating in 2A. According to the Regional results, "Mount Carmel" is the school in Region 14, and "Mt. Carmel" is the school in Region 5. Walther Lutheran High School was renamed Walther Christian Academy after the 2013 Contest 2019 "Ron Jaegle" is listed as a Participating School in 2A; it should be Lisle (who placed); he's the head coach Obvious typos (e.g., 2002: "Prpspect, Mt. Prospect" and "Regnia Dominican, Wilmette") got fixed "Crescent-Iroquios" in back-to-back years ----- In 2007, Wesclin is listed both as a 1A and 2A school, complete with total scores for both classes. They show up in the event totals in 2A only; the 1A totals match the 1A totals for Wesclin from the previous year. Further, there's a school with a team place of 23rd, "Christ Our Savior Lutheran", also listed as a Regional winner, which is NOT on the list of Participating Schools in 1A (or any other Division). Checking the Regional Results (ugh), that school won Region 19 (SIU) to advance to State, so that is again correct. I am assuming that they were inadvertently left off of the Participating Schools list, and I am adding them and removing Wesclin (who is still in 2A). More 2007 Problems: Neither Cissna Park nor Red Bud are listed under Participating Schools yet both have team scores. Checking the Written events shows *even more* schools who clearly sent competitors to State but have no listing under Participating Schools. I think perhaps I should not trust this list. I'm hoping it's only 2007A. Error Checking: I went through the Results in 1A for the four written events and checked that the schools showing up were all on the Participating Schools list. They were for 2004, 2005, and 2006. This gives me hope that the errors are confined to 2007. In 2007, I went through the 1A results for every event and listed the checked that the schools showing up were all on the Participating Schools list. 15 schools were not, including those listed above. 5 schools were listed as Participating but did not; one of those was Fisher, who I had previously seen from the Regional results had no State Qualifiers, so that is accurate information to say that Fisher did not participate at State. I have changed the Participating Schools list for 1A in 2007 to reflect the results. The really bad news is that the number of Participating schools was the same in every Division in 2007, not just in 1A (where it really wasn't). This leads me to believe there *may* be bad information in ALL Divisions for 2007. - 2A checks out - 3AA checks out - 4AA checks out So the errors seem to only be in 1A. 2007 3AA: Eisenhower is assumed to be Blue Island and not Decatur, as they competed in the Regional at Chicago State 2014: Dunlap (3AA) has the same coach as Dunlap Home School (1A) in 2013, so I had thought it was the same school. I question whether this was actually the coach, though, as there's no coach listed for Regionals. (At State in 2013, it says they had one student, a sophomore, but the Regional results say they qualified FS8 and FS2 as well as one student in Geometry Writtens. I *think* this is one student who took FS8 solo (and scored 60, a Regional Champ event score) as well as FS2 solo (it does say that for FS2).) It is possible that the student is from the area and the coach from the high school -- who was not competing -- coached this person after qualifying for State, and then the next year coached his own team. I have moved the participation from 2014 and later to the school who participated in 1987 (it was a different coach then, but after over 25 years I don't expect coaches to necessarilty be the same). 2019 IMSA: So here we have A Problem. IMSA is not listed under the Participating Schools in 2019, which is correct, since they didn't show up. However, as I have assumed to this point that all FTQs have been listed as such on the final place report, this leads to a likely incorrect statement that IMSA was not an FTQ in 2019. The only way to check this would be to look at the Regional results from 2019 and look for FTQs, but I feel like if I do that, I need to do that for EVERY year. --- In 2020, the State Contest was Not Held, so there is no Places from that year. However, the Regional Contest *was* held, and the State Qualifiers had been determined before the decision was made to cancel the State Contest. I have gone back to the Regional Results and assumed that all the State Qualifiers would, in fact, participate. (That did add three new schools for 2020.) This allowed a listing of Participating Schools, as well as Regional Champion teams and At-Large Qualifier teams, because once again, the Regional Contests *did happen*. I was concerned that 2021 would have gobs of Participating Schools, but only three were new: Rochelle Zell (which is not in Rochelle), Francis W. Parker, and Richards. I know Richards [Oak Lawn] had competed at Regionals before but not had a State Qualifier. The results are, as they were in 1981, a single Contest with Regional Champions retroactively. --- 00:47 05-Oct-23 I did NOT put in the First: and Most Recent: for all the Achievements just to see Naperville North 1994. I did it to see ones I *didn't* know. --- Many of the History Lessons come from the fine site illinoishsglorydays.com and its predecessor site leopardfan.tripod.com --- The following years have total ambiguities in the Participation (two schools with the same name and division): 1999A: Marquette High School [Alton and Ottawa]
